Top dress supplies

Top dressing smooths out a bumpy lawn and feeds the grass as it grows through. It works on patchy backyards and established lawns alike.

Hands holding fertilised top dress over a pile

Quick answer

Top dress is a fine blend spread thinly over an existing lawn to level low spots and feed the grass. We supply two: Fertilised Top Dress, a nutrient-rich organic blend for tired lawns, and USGA Top Dress Sand, a clean sand for drainage and levelling. Apply it 5–10mm deep so the grass can grow through.

Choose USGA Top Dress Sand for drainage, or Fertilised Top Dress for nutrient-rich growth. You can top dress at any time of year — if the grass is tired or needs a strong start, it is the first thing we recommend.

Common questions about top dress

When should I top dress my lawn?

You can top dress at any time of year, but the lawn recovers fastest in the warmer growing months from spring to early autumn, when the grass is actively growing through the new layer.

How thick should top dressing be?

Spread top dress 5–10mm deep and work it into the lawn with the back of a rake so the tips of the grass stay visible. Deeper low spots are best filled in two or three light applications.

Should I use Fertilised Top Dress or USGA sand?

Choose Fertilised Top Dress if the lawn needs feeding as well as levelling. Choose USGA Top Dress Sand if drainage is the priority or the lawn already sits on rich soil.
