Our road base is made from blue rock, commonly known as blue metal: crushed stone and fines that come together for consistent compaction. It is used for a firm ground structure in heavy traffic areas, or wherever a compaction standard is required.
Quick answer
Road base is a blend of crushed rock and fines that compacts into a firm, stable layer for driveways, slabs and access roads. We supply three grades: Road Base 2.1 (CBR80) for heavy traffic, 2.3 (CBR45) for general driveways and slabs, and 2.5 (CBR15) for light-duty fill. It needs moisture and machine compaction.
| Product | Best for | Typical depth |
|---|---|---|
| Road Base 2.1 – CBR80 | Heavy traffic, compaction standard required | 100–150mm compacted |
| Road Base 2.3 – CBR45 | Home driveways, paths, slab bases | 100–150mm compacted |
| Road Base 2.5 – CBR15 | Sub-base, fill, access tracks | As specified |
It is a 40mm crushed rock blend that needs moisture and machine compaction for best results. For access roads, driveways and paving sub-base, recycled concrete is a cheaper alternative.

“Very good service provided by Jimel Transport. Ordered road base and it was delivered to Ipswich promptly at short notice. I will continue to use them and recommend others to give them a try.”
CBR (California Bearing Ratio) measures how much load a compacted material can carry. A higher number means a stronger base: CBR80 is the strongest of our three grades and CBR15 the lightest duty.
Road Base 2.3 (CBR45) suits most residential driveways and slab bases. Choose 2.1 (CBR80) where trucks or heavy vehicles will use the surface regularly. Our road base grades guide explains the differences.
Spread road base in layers of about 100mm, dampen each layer and compact it with a plate compactor or roller before adding the next. Dry road base will not bind properly.
