Tool
Landscape volume calculator
Enter the length, width and depth of your area to see how many cubic metres to order, plus an approximate weight. It works for soil, mulch, sand, stone, aggregate and road base.
You need about
{{ vol }} m³
Area {{ area }} m² · approx. {{ tonnes }} tonnes · includes 5% extra for settling
How the calculation works
Volume (m³) = length (m) × width (m) × depth (m). Depth is entered in millimetres, so 100mm becomes 0.1m. We add 5% for settling and uneven ground. Weight uses typical bulk densities and is a guide only: moisture changes it.
| Material | Typical depth | 1 m³ covers | Approx. tonnes per m³ |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mulch | 75–100mm | 10–13 m² | 0.3–0.4 |
| Garden soil | 200–300mm | 3–5 m² | 1.1–1.3 |
| Under turf soil | 75–100mm | 10–13 m² | 1.2–1.4 |
| Top dress | 5–10mm | 100–200 m² | 1.2–1.4 |
| Sand | 20–100mm | 10–50 m² | 1.4–1.6 |
| River stone | 50–100mm | 10–20 m² | 1.5–1.7 |
| Aggregate | 50–100mm | 10–20 m² | 1.4–1.6 |
| Road base | 100–150mm | 7–10 m² | 1.8–2.0 |
