Load-bearing capacity
At the heart of Road Base 2.1 – CBR80 lies its California Bearing Ratio (CBR) rating of 80 — an exceptional indicator of its load-bearing capacity and structural integrity.
Road base · 09.01
Our highest-strength road base. A CBR of 80 gives a solid, stable, water-resistant foundation for roads, carparks, driveways and slabs.
Quick answer
Road Base 2.1 – CBR80 is the highest-strength grade of road base we supply, with a California Bearing Ratio of 80. A CBR of 80 or higher is ideal for heavy-duty, high-traffic pavements. It compacts into a solid, stable, water-resistant foundation that needs minimal upkeep, for carparks, driveways, road construction and foundational layers under concrete slabs or pavers. Lay about 100–150mm and compact.

CBR (California Bearing Ratio) measures how much load a compacted base can carry. The higher the number, the stronger the base.
| Grade | CBR | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Road Base 2.1 – CBR80 | 80 | Heavy-duty, high-traffic pavements and road construction (this product) |
| Road Base 2.3 – CBR45 | 45 | Standard roads, driveways and parking areas |
| Road Base 2.5 – CBR15 | 15 | Landscape levelling, paver bases and lighter-duty areas |

Designed to be water-resistant, Road Base 2.1 reduces the risk of material breakdown due to environmental factors. Whether it’s rain, flooding, or high moisture content, this road base remains intact and reliable, making it an excellent all-weather solution.
Heavy-duty, high-traffic pavements such as roads, carparks and commercial driveways, plus foundational layers under slabs and pavers.
Not always. CBR45 (Type 2.3) is common for standard driveways. Choose 2.1 where heavy vehicles or high traffic will use the surface.
Allow 100–150mm compacted. One cubic metre covers about 7–10 m² at that depth; order a little extra because it compacts down.
