Under turf soil
Under turf soil is a light, free-draining base for new lawns. It spreads and levels easily and gives turf roots somewhere to grow. See our guide to preparing the ground for new turf.
Top dress
Top dress is spread thinly over an existing lawn to fill hollows and level the surface. Spread 5–10mm at a time so the grass can grow through, and repeat if needed. Our top dressing guide walks through it.
Garden soil
Garden soils carry more organic matter and nutrients for beds and veggie patches. For edibles, choose a veggie mix; for general flower and shrub beds, Premium Garden Soil drains freely and suits most plants. Dig or blend the new soil into the existing ground rather than leaving a hard layer underneath.
Common questions
Can I use garden soil under turf?
Under turf soil is better. It is lighter, drains more freely and is easier to level, which suits turf roots.
How deep should soil be for a vegetable garden?
Allow 200–300mm of a veggie mix so roots have room to grow.
What is the difference between top dress and under turf soil?
Under turf soil goes under new turf, 100–150mm deep. Top dress is spread thinly over an existing lawn, 5–10mm at a time, to level it.
