The short answer
Choose by the conditions your lawn will face, not by looks alone. Brisbane’s hot, humid summers and mild winters suit all four warm-season varieties we supply, but they differ a lot in shade tolerance, wear and upkeep.
Side-by-side comparison
| Variety | Shade | Wear and recovery | Upkeep | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sir Walter Buffalo | High | Good | Medium | Shaded yards, family lawns |
| Soft Buffalo | Medium–high | Good | Medium | Soft feel for kids and pets |
| Wintergreen | Low | Very high, fast recovery | Higher (mows often) | Full sun, heavy traffic, sports |
| Zoysia | Medium | Good, slow recovery | Low (slow growing) | Low-maintenance, drought-tolerant lawns |
Ratings are general guidance for South East Queensland and compare the four varieties against each other.
If your yard is shaded
Pick Sir Walter Buffalo. Its broad leaves hold colour with only a few hours of direct sun, which suits yards under trees or beside two-storey houses. Soft Buffalo is the next best option.
If the lawn gets heavy use
Pick Wintergreen. It spreads by runners above and below ground, so worn patches fill back in quickly. It needs full sun and more frequent mowing.
If you want less mowing
Pick Zoysia. It grows slowly, needs less water once established and stays dense, so it mows less often. It is slower to repair if it is damaged.
Give any turf a good start
Whichever variety you choose, lay it on 75–100mm of under turf soil on the day it arrives, then water deeply. Our guide to preparing the ground for new turf covers each step, and you can compare every variety on our turf range.
Sun, shade and wear
Start with how much direct sun the lawn gets. No turf grows well in full shade, but some varieties handle a few hours less sun than others. Next, think about traffic. Kids, dogs and regular foot traffic favour a hard-wearing variety that recovers quickly. If the lawn is mostly for looks, you can put softness and colour first.
Caring for a new lawn
Water new turf every day for the first one to two weeks, then gradually space out watering as the roots take hold. Wait until the turf is firmly rooted before the first mow, usually two to three weeks in warm weather, and only take off the top third of the leaf. A light feed after the first month helps it thicken.
Ordering turf
Measure the lawn area in square metres and add about 5% for cuts around edges and curves. Have the ground prepared before the turf arrives, and plan to lay it the same day. Read preparing the ground for new turf for the steps, and see the full turf range.
Keeping it healthy long term
Brisbane lawns do best mown a little higher in summer, watered deeply rather than often, and top dressed once a year to keep them level. See how to top dress a lawn.
